After over thirty years as an educator, with 28.5 of those years spent at Southern Lehigh High School, Mr. Jeff Hershey is retiring at the end of this year. He’ll leave behind generations of students who credit him with igniting their love for writing and truly making a difference in their lives.
Mr. Hershey did not cut corners on his own education, attending Penn State University, Millersville University, and DeSales University to obtain a bachelor of science in journalism, a secondary English certification, and a master’s degree in education, respectively. He pursued a short-lived career in the corporate world before becoming a teacher, and joined the SLHS faculty in 1997, back when the high school consisted of only 725 students.
“I sat at a computer for three years and decided that that’s not what I wanted to do for the rest of my life,” Mr. Hershey said. “I always liked working with teenagers, in the limited experience I had with it before becoming a teacher. I guess that it was the subject matter: the combination of the kids and helping them along their pathway in life.”
These three considerations inspired him towards teaching, and, soon after starting his career, brought him to Southern Lehigh. Throughout his long tenure, Mr. Hershey has taught a wide array of classes from Honors English 11 and AP English Language, to Introduction to Video, TV, and Film Production.
He’s deeply grateful for the ways in which he’s been able to guide students through these courses, giving them the tools and preparation to succeed later in life; his former students have gone on to be everything from a famous animator to a graphic designer for the Washington Post.
He has also played an active role outside the classroom by advising the Spartan News morning TV production, as well as announcing at football games and track and field meets. Students can also thank Mr. Hershey for contributing to many of the unique opportunities that round out a Southern Lehigh education, such as summer cross-cultural trips, field trips, proms, and guest speakers.
“I’ve made millions of memories at Southern Lehigh,” Mr. Hershey said. “My career has been everything I’ve wanted it to be, and the best decision I ever made was becoming a teacher.”
As Mr. Hershey prepares to leave the high school, he is excited for what his retirement may hold. From golfing and traveling the world—and of course lots of reading—to spending more time with the people he loves, he will finally enjoy some much deserved rest and relaxation.
“I hope that I’ve given the students I’ve had the tools to succeed in the next level of their education, and furthermore in life,” Mr. Hershey said. “That’s pretty much all you can aspire to: to give you guys the tools to make your life as successful as possible.”
