With the holidays slowly approaching and winter break right around the corner, Southern Lehigh High School students will once again enjoy traditional festivities, food, and fun at the third annual Multicultural Fair. The event is organized by the No Place For Hate committee at Southern Lehigh High School, with the goal to create a space for Southern Lehigh’s increasingly diverse student body to gather and share their cultures and customs.
Last year, the Multicultural Fair had an abundance of tables representing different cultures from around the world, including countries such as South Korea, the Dominican Republic, India, and France, to name a few.
Food, drinks, games, and music made the fair a hit and valuable experience for those who attended. Junior Zanaib Qaisar emphasized the importance of having the Multicultural Fair at school.
“The engagement and welcoming atmosphere opens up the school to diversity,” Qaisar said. “With the amount of participation, people can open up to cultures they never thought they’d be interested in.”
For the past two years, the Multicultural Fair has been a great success. It provides a place for all students to learn about the diversity at Southern Lehigh. Each year the event attracts more participants, as its popularity has risen exponentially.
Last year, demonstrations such as a Taekwando showcase and a dragon dance drew many people’s attention, as students caught a glimpse into these Korean and Chinese arts.
Senior Janvi Patel is a member of the committee organizing the multicultural fair, and is excited for this year’s event.
“Students should look forward to exploring different cultures and trying new foods,” Patel said. “We are trying to include even more cultures this year so students are encouraged to join.”
Unlike the last two years when students could only attend if their teachers signed up to bring their class, high school principal Mr. Joshua Miller would like all students to have the opportunity to attend this year’s fair. The committee is creating a schedule so that all classes are included.
The fair will be held on Friday, December 20th, the last day of school before winter break, during Blocks 1 and 2, so attendees have time to walk around and explore different tables set up around the cafeteria.
