What started in 2008 as a way to bring attention to breast cancer has become an annual tradition named the Pink Out. The Southern Lehigh girls volleyball team fundraises money during its annual Pink Out for the Sassy Massey Foundation and the SideOut Foundation.
“The goal is to raise money and promote awareness for both of the causes,” said head girls volleyball coach Mr. Don West.
The foundations received $18,000 in total donations last year. West wished to raise more money this year, and both of the foundations earned $6,000 individually for 2025. The Pink Out included people dressed in pink, decorations, and even balloons on the bleachers.
“I really like how we go all out and how we do all these decorations to make everything feel just super together,” senior volleyball player Zoë Roman said, “and we do all these things not only for the people but the charities.”
This year, there were baskets auctioned off during intermission. Thirty-eight baskets in total, they were as simple as a Wawa basket and as unique as a private wrestling lesson with Olympian Kerry McCoy.
“I really like the hair care… there was something for everybody,” said Roman.
The baskets aren’t the only things people come to the volleyball game for. The event helps educate others about breast cancer and people with sickness. The foundations include a goal to spread kindness, and each year more people find favorite parts to the Pink Out game.
“My favorite part is just the atmosphere, I think it is so much fun,” said junior volleyball player Sama Al-Alim.
A shared goal to many is to find a better understanding of the Pink Out. Sassy Massey Smiles foundation and SideOut foundation are supported by Southern Lehigh High School.
“The more that we spread awareness to it, the more people come out and truly see how amazing it is,” Sama Al-Alim said.
