“Safe Haven,” Nicholas Sparks’ latest book-turned-movie, hit theaters on February 14th. Nicholas Sparks is known for his intense, tear-jerking romance novels, and “Safe Haven” fit the part perfectly.
The movie begins with Erin Tierney (Julianne Hough) running from her abusive husband, Kevin Tierney, who is a Boston police officer. She ends up in a small town called Southport, North Carolina, where she meets a local man named Alex. They begin a relationship together, but right when everything seems perfect, tragedy hits.
“Safe Haven” follows the main idea of the book, but, there were a lot of changes made to the movie. For example, Alex’s daughter’s name was changed from Kristen to Lexie for the movie. Erin’s hair color starts out blonde in the book and is dyed to brown, but it’s reversed in the movie.
“I loved…the book, and the movie was good too,” sophomore Leah Hantz said, “but I really had to stop trying to find all the changes because it was beginning to ruin the movie for me.”
According to rottentomatoes.com, only 13 percent of critics liked the movie, compared to 72 percent of the audience who enjoyed the film. Fandango.com gave it a “Go” from the audience, but a “Don’t Go” from the critics.
