“Only one came out alive.” I was a little disturbed when I heard the store clerk say that, and I asked him to explain what he meant by it. But, before he got a chance to tell me, Heather came bursting through the doors of the corner store. “Mommy!” I remember hearing her scream as she fell to the ground. “It is not safe! It is not safe!” she yelled over and over again.
“Heather what is wrong? What’s not safe?”
“It is not safe! We must leave!” She yelled and threw her fists on the ground.
“What is not safe?” I squatted down next to her, grabbing her hand. But suddenly she snapped out of her trance. She could not remember where she was or what she said. She looked up at me and the store clerk was looking at her, completely mind boggled. That’s when I got a bad feeling about the house.
One day, I took the skeleton key to the locked attic. It worked on the door that lead to the attic. After opening the first door, I walked up the steps, which took me to a little hallway. At the end of the dark, dusty hallway lay a little door with a padlock on it. To my surprise, the key did not open the padlock. I contacted the real estate agent that day. She said there was never a little door in the attic and did not believe me. However, she said that if there was a locked door in the attic, the key should be in the house somewhere and told me to look for it.
While cleaning, I found a little box that was locked away on a shelf in the parlor. I was not shocked to find out that the box was locked too. I was anxious to know what was in that room, and why no one knew about it. I ended up breaking the box and retrieved what was in it.
I sent Heather outside to play and then ventured to the attic. I slowly walked up to it and opened the door. It was a dark little room with a small mattress, a small book shelf, a little window, and some old children’s clothes laying on the floor. They were clothes that looked like they belonged to a little boy. The room was cold and musty, and a breeze blew through as I walked in. At the time I did not know this, but the breeze unleashed the spirit of the little boy who lived in that room. A little boy with a dark, unanswered goal. To be continued….
