During the second week of school, the 1:1 laptop initiative culminated when every student received a MacBook Pro for use during the school day. The student reactions to the initiative have been mixed but mostly positive as they adjust to working with the laptops on a daily basis.
The laptop initiative was a hot topic among students in the days before the laptops were distributed. A student survey revealed that 44% of students looked forward to the laptops before receiving them, and 11% did not. The remaining 45% of the students either felt indifferent or that the laptop initiative was simply a rumor.
On the day of laptop distribution, however, students’ feelings about the laptop program shifted. 62% of students liked the laptops on the day of receiving them, an 18% increase from the pre-laptop sentiments, and 28% had a neutral opinion.
Many concerns have arisen among the students regarding the new laptops. Among the most common is the 2:50 p.m. time limit for the laptops to be returned at the end of the day. Roughly 87% of students surveyed said that they would like to take their laptops home.
Students also submitted a wide range of suggestions in the survey on how the laptop initiative could be made better. Some would like to install programs to help in classes like Computer Science and Mass Media, while others suggest allowing each student to take a charger with them, and several want the opportunity to purchase the laptop at the end of their senior year.
The administration and tech department are working hard to address student concerns about the laptops.
According to Technology Director Mr. Ken Jordan, there is exciting news about the laptops just around the corner. While he can’t reveal much, Jordan said, “the tech department is planning to make a big announcement very soon.”
