The National Honor Society collected money at Southern Lehigh High School from February 5th to 27th in the annual Pennies for Patients campaign in support of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
The fundraiser raised about $1,600. National Honor Society members were pleased with the turnout, finding that many students were willing to contribute.
“When kids are reminded and they have spare change they are willing to donate,” senior Selena Rodriguez said.
Throughout the course of the fundraiser, prizes like cookies and lollipops were given to the homeroom that donated the most each week. Mr. Helinski and Mr. Langsdorf’s combined homeroom, who raised the most money overall, won a breakfast at the end of the campaign. Many students were more motivated to contribute.
Freshman Brian Hendrzak said the biggest motivation was “to try to win the prize for our homeroom.”
Students also feel that it is important to contribute to fundraisers like these because of the help they give to others.
Sophomore Angeline Rizzo said she was motivated because “they benefit those less fortunate.”
The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society has collected money from Pennies for Patients in over 10 million schools throughout the country, according to their website. Their goal is to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families.
