Parents Prohibited from Delivering Items
As of November, high school students at Southern Lehigh are no longer permitted to request their parents to deliver items into the school. A message on Sapphire and an automated phone call home to parents informed parents and students of this impending rule change.
Before this rule change, parents were allowed to carry into school forgotten items for their children, and the office would transfer it to the students.
“I’m confused why this even became a rule,” senior Tyler Mann said. “If our parents are willing and able to bring in something forgotten at home, they should have the right to do so.”
The recent changes do have reason behind them, one of them being is student safety. Another concern was that the office staff could not thoroughly do their jobs without being disrupted constantly with belongings for students coming in and out of the school.
“They implemented the rule because the office was inundated with stuff being dropped off all day long,” math teacher Mr. Matt Greenawald said.
The change in such a small rule has created many different problems for students. For instance, if a student forget a project at home, he or she is forced to turn it in the next day because there is no way to go home and get it.
“It’s terrible because if I forget something, I’m just left to stress about it all day,” junior Julia Bergeman said.
Another concern is when a student-athlete forgets equipment there is no possible way to receive it, so the athlete could face possible repercussions from the coach.
“As a coach, I don’t expect any effect at all,” Mr. Greenawald said. “Our student athletes are just going to have to be more responsible on a daily basis.”
There have been a variety of reactions from the student body. A portion of the students are upset about the change in the rules, while for others, the rule simply does not apply to them.
