Let’s be honest, no one is exuberant about the dress code being enforced. Honestly, I haven’t heard a single person praise it. However, let’s take a step back: the dress code is not as unbearable as everyone is making it out to be.
Granted, when first hearing of this dress code I shared the opinion of most girls. Actually, I still felt hostile towards this code until I heard Mrs. Siegfried state her views on the subject. She preached to our journalism class (seriously preached) earlier this month about how much she hated short shorts.
“Trust me, I’m all about fashion,” she said. “If you don’t know that, then you don’t know me, but there’s a time and place for everything, and school isn’t the place for short shorts.”
I know how much girls love shorts and skirts, but, realistically, our principal is right. You can still wear leggings, shorts, and skirts; you just have to wait for the weekend. If girls complain that it’s hot and want to wear cooler clothing, they can buy shorts that are a bit longer and less revealing. If girls don’t want to buy them, they shouldn’t complain if they’re sent down to the office.
Ladies, also keep in mind the sanitary issues that arise when skirts and shorts are too short. If a girl wearing a skirt and skimpy underwear sits on a desk, and another person has to use the same desk to write on next period… well, yeah, you get the point. That’s just plain gross.
You were notified before and during summer about the dress code, so saying “I didn’t know” is not an excuse. The repetitive exclamations of “There’s nowhere to buy long shorts!“ also isn‘t fooling anyone, as I’ve found plenty of mid-thigh shorts this summer that are name brand. If you think you look like you’re in middle school when your shorts have five inch inseams, then pull out your favorite pair of jeans and heels and wear those instead.
When you think rationally, no part of this dress code is obnoxious to deal with, but if you still feel like marching down the hall with picket signs and exposed skin, go for it. Truly, dressing classy should not be that difficult. If you feel differently, then please, just shut it.
