Thanks to the snow days that Southern Lehigh has decided to use, most for the four days missed in the fall due to Hurricane Sandy, students and teachers are forced by a school board decision to make up a day of school on the Monday after Easter, traditionally the last day of spring break. This can place a huge damper on some of the plans made during the extended weekend.
Numerous students wish to keep the Monday for travel or religious reasons.
“Yes, the Monday that is being made up is ruining my plans,” sophomore Rachael Hildenbrandt said. “During spring break I am going to meet family that I don’t get a chance to see often. My family has had to alter our plans in order to be back by Monday.”
Sophomore David Hamm is in the same predicament. “I am going to a cabin for vacation and its pretty far away so we had to adjust our flight in order to make it back,” he said. “I think that the Monday is important to keep for traveling purposes.”
Another main reason for wanting that Monday off is for religious purposes. While Easter Monday is not a federal holiday, many do observe the religious traditions of Easter Monday before Passover ends on Tuesday. To those who honor the Passover, like sophomore Julia Dunham, that day vital.
“Easter Monday…typically is a day spent with my family and now it will be spent in school,” Dunham said. “We can’t celebrate the Easter Monday before the end of Passover.”
The Monday ending spring break is important for numerous reasons, and it seems only fair for Southern Lehigh to excuse the inclement weather just this one time.
