After the first few weeks of summer, its common to run out of things to do and end up sitting around complaining and doing nothing. Here are some things to do in case this happens to you.
1. Go on a run or bike ride. Get in shape for fall sports or other things. It can be tough to get yourself to work out without much incentive or someone to push you, so I recommend going with a friend. “I go on bike rides because it’s an adventure,” sophomore William Flynn said.
2. SAT Prep. It’s never too early to start studying for the SAT, and it can be a good productive way to spend time. The summer is the time to forget everything you learned over the school year and doing SAT prep can help you work your brain all year round.
3. Read a book. When you find a good book, it can really pull you in. You can spend hours and hours reading it waiting to see what happens next. It may feel a little nerdy to spend the summer reading; however, it’s a great way to spend a rainy day. “When I’m bored, I’ll go to the library to check out some books to read. With an interesting book, I can always be occupied,” freshman Angela Justin said.
4. Volunteer somewhere. Nothing beats the good feeling of helping someone else. If you help out at a place that interests you, it can be a lot of fun.
5. Climb a tree. Find a tree with pretty low branches and see if you can climb it. Once you’re in the tree, you can hang out up there and watch people go by. See how long it takes for someone passing to realize you’re sitting in a tree.
6. Go swimming. On a hot summer day the perfect way to cool down is to go swimming. If you don’t have a pool and can’t go to one, you can run through a sprinkler or even use a hose or water balloons.
7. Practice a hobby or learn a new one. If there is something you like to do that you typically don’t have time to, summer is a great time to work on it. You can learn to play an instrument or practice drawing. “I work on my artwork,” freshman Peter Naktin said.
8. Do a puzzle. Doing a puzzle can be a lot of fun. It can take a lot of patience, but if you find a puzzle that you think looks really nice, it can be worth the effort.
9. Bake a dessert. Even if you don’t like to cook in general, making desserts is a great way to spend time, and it will be worth it when you have a tasty dessert to eat. This will make everyone in your house happy!
10. Plant a garden. It isn’t hard to plant flowers and they can look great. If you have nothing else to do, this can be a nice way to make your yard look better and do something fun. It will also get you outdoors.
