The Upper Saucon Township is extending the Rail Trail from Upper Saucon Township Community Park to Southern Lehigh Memorial Park through a $464,000 contract that was approved on March 11, 2013. The extension adds another two miles to the existing five-mile trail and will be complete by the end of 2013.
The Saucon Rail Trail was created in 2011 as a way to promote healthy lifestyles and family recreation for the local residents.
“I think it is a great way to get exercise,” freshman Daniela Silva said.
The Rail Trail typically receives heavy use from local residents and is convenient for people to walk or bike places without having to travel on busy roads or intersections.
“I think it could be a good idea,” freshman Nick George said.
The trail will be seven miles long, from Hellertown Borough to Coopersburg Borough. It can be used for walking, jogging, and biking.
“I take my dogs for walks there, I go for runs there, and I like biking with friends to go eat places,” freshman Lauren Wolfe said.
The Rail Trail is very beneficial to local residents and provides opportunity for safe recreation.
“I am excited because in the summer I like to bike to Rita’s with my friends,” Wolfe said, “and if it’s longer it gives me more options to go places.”
