With the advancement of technology and social media, many people are set to meet new people online. The question remains, are the people you are talking to really the person that they say they are?
With everything that’s happening in the media with Notre Dame’s star linebacker, Manti Te’o, and the new hit TV show “Catfish,” people are starting to question more and more if internet personas are truly who they say they are.
Some people believe that meeting people online is easier, and so does sophomore Jason Renner.
“It’s easier to meet people online because it is not face to face,” Renner said, “and you don’t have to worry about the things you would if you were [talking in person].”
Yes, it is easier to meet people online now, which is why Doug Brockwell, a contributor for yahoo.com, says that 17% of people meet their spouses online.
Is it safer? Officer Brian McLaughlin says no.
“I do believe meeting people online is dangerous. I’ve always disliked it,” Officer McLaughlin said. “It only conveys words and not your real emotions.”
Companies spend millions of dollars to prevent fraud, but all you need to do is click a button, and you can be whoever you want.
