Southern Lehigh’s 2012 homecoming took a Sadie Hawkins twist, as more girls asked guys to be their dates. Even though homecoming was not stated to be a Sadie Hawkins dance, numerous girls stepped up the courage to take matters into their own hands.
When school gets back into the swing of things, many are eager to hear how their peers get asked. It was a shock this year when many boys proclaimed they weren’t going to ask anyone. This sparked an idea for a handful of upperclassmen girls to compose a video to ask their friends to homecoming.
Eleven upperclassmen girls composed a video of themselves at the Promenade Shops with signs spelling out the word “homecoming.” On the back of each individual sign was a boy’s name and his picture. Each girl was given a short clip to show their letter and then the boy they wished to take. If the boy said yes, he was given a sandwich.
“I really liked it because it was really fun and different,” Michelle Moreira said, laughing. Many of the girls agreed with Michelle; they thought it was great to be on the other side for asking. It gave them a chance to be creative and make ten amazing sandwiches.
The boys had the same response. Many were amused and amazed at how much the girls did in order to ask them. Plus, every boy was given a sandwich, which was a dream come true.
“I loved being asked. I don’t have to pay for homecoming tickets!” Matt Kim said with a smile.
Although this video was a major homecoming highlight, other girls stepped up to ask boys.
“I based mine off the show ‘How I Met Your Mother.’ Each period I gave him something different. First period was a blue French horn, followed by a yellow umbrella, then a jar of olives, and finally during fourth period I came in with the theme song playing and a six pack of root beer and a sign saying ‘homecoming,’” Natalie Costa said about how she asked Patrick Kroll.
Other girls used social media, showed up at sports practices, and even surprised boys at their houses.
Ladies, if you didn’t get your chance to ask yet, try it out for the next dance. The guys really love being asked, especially when it’s a big scene.
“I would demand rose petals falling and it be at a gazebo. The girl would be there with a cupcake and more rose petals,” Matt Kim said.
Even though this was not an official Sadie Hawkins dance, this might just inspire one.
