Volunteer work has become an important part of many students’ extracurricular activities. Southern Lehigh High School senior Matt Stottlemyer spends his time volunteering for Lower Milford Fire Company, a pastime that involves much more action and dedication than the typical high school volunteer gig.
SLSpotlight: How did you become a first responder?
Stottlemyer: My neighbor is the Assistant Chief, and he just kind of told me about it and got me into it.
SLSpotlight: How long have you been doing this?
Stottlemyer: Three years now.
SLSpotlight: How much time does this work require outside of school?
Stottlemyer: A lot. It’s a lot of training, and a lot of time doing calls.
SLSpotlight: Are there any particular memories that you’d like to share about your involvement in this activity?
Stottlemyer: We had an accident right up the road from me, and it was five cars. It was kind of crazy trying to deal with all the patients.
SLSpotlight: What is the hardest part about this kind of volunteer work?
Stottlemyer: I would say the training; it’s constant training.
The Lower Milford Fire Company was founded in 1948 and is 100 percent volunteer based. If interested, one can become a volunteer for the Lower Milford Fire Company by emailing or calling the station, or stopping by on a Monday night after 7pm.
