There seems to be no shortage of zombies in media, making their mark in books, video games and movies. While most of the stories follow along a similar plotline, “Warm Bodies,” based on the novel by Isaac Marion, stands out as a new spin on the tales of the undead.
Released in theaters on February 1st, the movie tells the story of R, a zombie who wants more out of life, or rather, death. On an outing mission to find humans to eat, he comes across Julie, a living person from one of the last safe zones on Earth, as she and her friends scavenge for supplies.
When R finds Julie, he decides not to eat her, but instead protect her. As they spend time together, R begins changing, becoming more human again. Could this be the cure humanity has strived for?
The movie is hard to pin a genre on. Part romantic comedy, part action, this movie is a unique hybrid, and very well put together.
Nicholas Hoult, who plays R, perfectly combines the mannerisms of an awkward teenager and a walking corpse. His co-star, Teresa Palmer, is equally exceptional in her portrayal of Julie.
I can’t say this movie is for everyone. Those interested in the love story may be put off by the more violent scenes, while those looking for a movie with hordes of zombies may find the romance to be too prevalent.
That being said, I strongly recommend that everyone give this movie a chance. It isn’t excessively gory, the love story will grow on you, and it is incredibly funny. Every couple should make watching Warm Bodies one of their Valentine’s Day activities.
