The Cake Decorating Club put their baking skills to work and sold their treats on March 11-15 during homeroom and after school to help benefit the local food pantry.
“We had the bake sale at this time last year and it went over really well,” club adviser Mrs. Meredith Dapsis said, “so we decided to do it again this year.”
The club’s plan to have a bake sale was a success; students walked by every morning and afternoon and bought many treats, and whether they knew it or not, they helped serve the community. Fifty percent of the profit will benefit the Coopersburg Food Bank.
“I think it’s good because we’re giving money to a good cause, and the cupcakes are really good” said senior Jillian Tony, the vice president of the club.
The bake sale featured various sizes of cupcakes and included chocolate and vanilla flavors. There was an array of options available for anyone: vanilla on vanilla, vanilla with chocolate frosting, chocolate with vanilla frosting, or even chocolate on chocolate.
“We chose [to donate to] the food pantry because we wanted to give back to the community and we know there are a lot of people in need,” Mrs. Dapsis said. “Since we’re a ‘food-oriented’ club, we wanted to give back with food too.”
Each member of the club baked their favorite treats to contribute to the sale.
A bake sale is not very hard to put together; all it needs is “sugar, spice, and everything nice.”
Last year, the Southern Lehigh Cake Club raised around $500 for the Coopersburg Food Pantry. This year, earnings were a bit lower because of the time of the fundraiser, but members were still extremely grateful for being able to donate money to a great charity.
Since the club is fairly new, many people might not know how it all began.
“I chose to start the Cake Decorating Club last year,” Mrs. Dapsis said, “because quite a few students showed an interest in learning cake decorating.”
The club has lasted the past two years, and Mrs. Dapsis hopes it will continue to grow as students learn what really goes on during a meeting.
“Our meetings consist of me demonstrating techniques and then members practicing on their own treats,” she said.
Meetings are held every other Tuesday, and any student is welcome.
