Spring is an exciting time of year for high-achieving sophomores as they are invited for induction into Southern Lehigh’s chapter of the National Honor Society.
According to nhs.com The National Honor Society (NHS) is the nation’s premier organization established to recognize outstanding students at the high school level. More than just honor roll, NHS recognizes students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of scholarship, leadership, service, and character, the four pillars of NHS.
The National Honor Society at Southern Lehigh consists of about 130 students who meet the first Friday of every month. During these meetings, they organize community service projects, recognize outstanding service, and discuss other academic events.
“We really try to have members who are involved in community service or tutoring,” Isabela Uribe, president of the SLHS National Honor Society, said.
To be eligible for membership in NHS, a student must have a cumultive GPA of 3.6 at the end of sophomore year. Potential candidates then receive a formal invitation to apply. If a student chooses to accept the invitation, he or she fills out a short questionnaire and writes a one-page paper about the importance of one of the four pillars.
Once the essay is complete, there is a small induction ceremony into the organization, which includes a guest speaker and candle ceremony.
