“The Perks of Being a Wallflower” is a great story for every teen who has ever felt themselves standing on the fringes of friendship and acceptance. Charlie opens his heart to his “Friend,” someone not even he knows, by writing letters, starting with the first day of high school.
The School Library Journal states that “Charlie develops from an observant wallflower into his own man of action, and, with the help of a therapist, he begins to face the sexual abuse he had experienced as a child. This report on his life will engage teen readers for years to come.”
Readers beware: there is graphic, controversial content including an abortion, drug use, and other mature content. This novel may not be good for younger readers. This book can be found at the Southern Lehigh Public Library.
