With much hype surrounding it, the newest movie rendition of “The Great Gatsby,” directed by Baz Luhrman, was released in theatres on May 10.
This movie stars Leonardo DiCaprio as Jay Gatsby, Tobey Maguire as Nick Carraway, and Carey Mulligan as Daisy Buchanan. This star-studded cast makes the movie that much better.
For anyone who didn’t read the book, “The Great Gatsby” takes place in the rich town of West Egg, New York, and is narrated by character Nick Carraway. His neighbor is the wealthy Jay Gatsby, who throws extravagant parties to impress his lost love, Daisy Buchanan, who lives across the lake. Gatsby feels his purpose in life is to impress Daisy and win her back.
“I have very high expectations for this movie, and I’m so excited to see it,” senior Ana Cuvo said before seeing the film.
Personally, I thought the movie was amazing and met every single one of my expectations. The cast and acting was flawless. Mulligan did a wonderful job portraying Daisy, Isla Fisher portrayed Myrtle perfectly, and DiCaprio was an excellent Gatsby, as expected.
I only have two complaints about the movie. Instead of Meyer Wolfsheim having human molar cufflinks, he has a human molar tie clip. Also, Gatsby’s father did not show up at the end, and that was a disappointment.
“It wasn’t what I expected,” senior Antonia Somlai said, “but I would still go see it again.”
I would highly recommend this movie to everyone who has read the book (and even those who haven’t). It depicted the book exceptionally. The colors were extremely vivid, and the setting was amazing. The movie definitely matches all of the hype in my opinion, and is a must see.
