While the rest of Southern Lehigh’s students were settling into the first two weeks of school, junior McKenzie Browne was in Italy representing the U.S. at the world championship for speed skating. McKenzie skated in the 200 and 300 meter time trials and the 500 meter sprint.
Browne finished 12th in her 300m final, 13th in 500m sprint race, and 14th in her 200m semi-final, but missed the final by only 0.033 second.
“I wasn’t happy at all…the times were so close,” Browne said about losing by 0.033 second. “But that’s the problem with time trials since it is that close. Plus it was my birthday so it kind of ruined my morning.”
When she wasn’t skating, McKenzie visited the beautiful beaches of Italy. She also enjoyed getting Italian gelato and authentic pizza everyday.
Besides going back to worlds and winning a medal, in the future, Mckenzie would also like to become a good role model for younger girls who want to compete.
