With the Southern Lehigh baseball team losing the Colonial League championship against Salisbury on May 16th with a score of 6-0, the Spartans went into the district championship game looking for a win. Unfortunately, the Spartans fell once again, losing to the Tamaqua Blue Raiders 4-3.
“We worked hard from the beginning of the season to now, day in and day out,” sophomore Preston Amato said. “It’s hard to take in that we were so close, but couldn’t get it done.”
The Spartans led early through the first three innings. Two errors by Southern Lehigh led to two unearned runs by Tamaqua, giving the Blue Raiders the lead and making the final score 4-3.
Seniors Pat Rhoads and Bobby Mirth and sophomore Preston Amato each had an RBI single for the Spartans. Junior Pete Long started the game for the Spartans, letting up three runs in four innings. Senior Brad Woroniak came in for relief, letting up one run in one inning. Nikos Milios came in for the sixth inning, giving up zero runs in one inning.
“We didn’t play as well as we knew we could; it was a close game, but we didn’t play to our full potential,” junior Trevor Musselman said. “However, we did have a great season.”
With the Spartans making it to districts, they ended the baseball season with an overall record of 18-8.
