New Coaching Lineup Leads Boys Basketball to District Playoffs
With a new line of coaches, the boys’ basketball team underwent some major changes this season. As the regular season came to an end with an overall record of 14-8, after a close 52-50 win over Salisbury on February 7, the team missed out on the Colonial League playoffs but will to advance to the District XI playoffs.
Attention this season was on new head coach Ben Tannous who lead an all-new coaching staff to making improvements to the program.
“Coach Tannous brings a lot of new energy to the gym everyday and makes us all even more excited about what we are working for in the future,” sophomore varsity starter Jacob Casse said.
The team faced a number of other challenges including illness and inclement weather.
“So many kids have gotten sick,” Coach Tannous said. “This has really limited our practice time and the amount of players we have available.”
Senior captains Casey Krause and Troy Reppert are the leaders of the 14-man varsity squad.
“It has been a real honor this year,” Reppert said. “I love being with the guys and seeing them progress as a team, and as players.”
In the last four games, Reppert averaged 15 points, a whole five points better than his season average. Reppert and junior Mike Zabrecky have also been main offensive factors for the Spartans this year.
Junior Noah Kandt has proved to be a consistent offensive threat as the starting point guard. Another team leader, his season average is 12.3 points per game.
This season four freshmen are on the varsity roster. One of them, Lucas Hudson, is a starter for the team.
“We have had an amazing year … and our team chemistry is great,” Hudson, who is a new student to Southern Lehigh, said. “Basketball has helped me adjust to the school; it has helped meet kids.”
Update: The team lost to Blue Mountain in the first round of District Playoffs Friday February 21, 2014.
