Before the school year officially began, the minds of freshmen were already filled with rumors about being tortured by upperclassmen. Although freshmen do have to sit at the top of the bleachers in the student section at football games and have to deal with the chant, “go home freshmen,” at pep-rallies, they are actually adjusting pretty well to their new environment, and the fear of taunting seems to be non-existent.
Out of several freshman interviewed, not one of them hates the high school. Some of them even went on to say they love the new freedoms they have here, from picking electives to using phones to text at lunch.
“There are a lot of tall people and seniors,” Katie Youngs said about her high school experience so far.
Chris Smith said, “[high school] is a big transition and you must be well prepared.”
Even though they like the high school, some freshmen still miss a few qualities of the middle school.
Peter Naktin said he misses, “having less people down at the middle school.”
“I miss not knowing the teachers like I did at the middle school,” said Caitlin Pedersen.
The freshman teachers also have thoughts about the new freshies.
“They’re all shark bait, but they’re a nice, hard-working, talented bunch of freshman,” biology teacher Mr. Rick Dreves said.
Overall, freshmen said they enjoy the freedoms in high school and like it way better than the middle school. Although there are downsides to being in a new school, they are working through it.
