After a surprise snowstorm that gave us a wonderful 2-hour delay on Friday, March 8, the students of Southern Lehigh were rewarded with some humorous entertainment: the Sweaty-Toothed Madmen performed for students during periods 10 and 11.
The Sweaty-Toothed Madmen are an improv comedy group from Gordon College in Massachusetts. The group travels around the New England area and down the East Coast for performances and competitions. Southern Lehigh alumnus Luke Miller is a member of the current group.
Improv comedy is a form of theater in which the actors make up their lines on the spot. A member of the audience could give them a theme, and the actors would have to perform a whole scene based on that theme.
Periods 10 and 11 were given a show that the teachers could opt to take their classes to see. Both shows included the same games played on stage, but the content each period was very different, due to the improvisation. The first show featured a hilarious skit on American tourists in North Korea, while the second show featured a frat party that included a werewolf, a compulsive liar, and a man that randomly shouted out the word “fart.”
Miller, a 2010 graduate of Southern Lehigh was, was featured in many of the improvisational games staged by the Madmen. While a student at SLHS, Miller was very involved with the theater, taking part in West Side Story and Curtains. Returning to his alma mater was all his idea; he contacted music teacher Mr. Matthew Wehr and set up the performance.
Mr. Wehr had a very positive response to Miller’s return to the Southern Lehigh stage.
“It was extremely rewarding,” Mr. Wehr said. “He has really matured and developed as an actor.”
Since Mr. Wehr is very into traditional theatre, he is only a fan of improv comedy to a degree. “Most of their pop culture references went right over my head,” he said, unsurprised, “but I liked the North Korea skit – much more my speed!”
Overall, the performance was a huge hit among the students and faculty at Southern Lehigh, providing them with enough laughter for a lifetime.
