Powder Puff 2013

On Thursday, November 14, varsity club hosted the sixth annual powder puff football game. Every year, the night starts out with the freshman playing the seniors, followed by the sophomores facing up against the juniors. Once again, this year the seniors took home the championship.

The result of the first game was a dominating 30-0 shutout for the seniors against the freshmen. The freshmen never have much of a chance against the seniors because of the age and size difference, but they always put up a good fight.

“We were very inexperienced, but I think the girls had fun playing and will give it another shot next year,” freshman coach Timmy Walter said.

The second game of the night was a low-scoring match that came right down to the end. The juniors came out victorious over the sophomores with Abbey Cerciello scoring the first-ever touchdown for the Class of 2015 during the first half. They managed to hold off the sophomore offense led by quarterback Bri Mobley, who almost threw a game-tying touchdown with only a few seconds left in the game.

“It was an intense game and I was nervous we were never going to score a touchdown,” junior quarterback Jenna Forrester said.  “Even worse, I thought we were going to lose to a team of underclassmen.”

The final was an intense game between the juniors and the seniors, with the Class of 2014 coming out victorious. The seniors have been so close to winning since their sophomore year in 2011.

“We should have won the past two years, but I think the games were rigged for the other seniors to win,” senior Morgan Kruczek said. “It felt great to finally come out on top.”

The first touchdown of the game went to the seniors after a long catch and run into the end zone by Madelene McDonald. The juniors answered back quickly, however, when Mady Campbell tied up the game. The score was 6-6 going into halftime, setting up an exciting second half.

The final score of the game was decided when Lauren Bertucci received a pass from quarterback Melann Amory in the end zone for the seniors’ second touchdown. This turned out to be the game-winning play, as the juniors went on one last drive, but couldn’t get into the end zone.

Time ran out and the seniors in the student section stormed the field to celebrate the Class of 2014’s first powder puff win. The senior coaches gave an inspirational game winning speech and were very proud of how the game went.

“I liked the way the girls played their hearts out and gave it their all until the final whistle was blown” senior coach Troy Reppert said.

Mr. Zeisloft, who organized this event, was also very happy with how the night went.

“The outcome was very similar to years past because the seniors won,” said Mr. Zeisloft. “Through the six years, there have been a few times when underclassmen teams have won, but for the most part it’s the seniors vs. the juniors in the final with the seniors’ experience prevailing them to victory.”

Every year there’s an unavoidable large number of complaints to Mr. Zeisloft about the game being thrown for the seniors.

Mr. Zeisloft has heard the complaints but says there is no truth to the rumors

“The powder puff game is played for a charity and that’s the most important part of it,” he said.  “The refs don’t care at all who wins. Usually we would like to see underclassmen having success in the tournament, but if it doesn’t work out that way, that is fine with me.”
