Christiana Lycette

Christiana Lycette, News Editor

Senior Christiana Lycette, a third-year reporter for The Spotlight and a second-year news editor, originally joined the newspaper during her sophomore year to improve her writing skills and get more involved with the school community. Contributing many of her own pieces to the paper, Christiana is most proud of “New policies roll out at Southern Lehigh HS” and “SLHS Angel 34 Club gives back for the holidays.” In addition to editing staff member’s articles, she also created the layout for the News section of the print issue.

“After the first year, I realized I had gained so much more than just improving my writing skills. I found I can make a true impact and promote change as a student,” Christiana said. “For example, my ‘New policies roll out at Southern Lehigh HS’ article talked about the students’ negative and upset reaction to the removal of the morning coffee shop. With the pathos employed in the article, enough attention was raised for Mr. Miller to reinstate the shop.”

Outside The Spotlight, Christiana volunteers her time at St. Luke's Hospital, the Country Meadows senior living homes, and the Allentown Refugee Center. She also is a junior board member for the “Team Arnav Foundation,” where she helps to raise money and orchestrate an annual 5K run for osteosarcoma cancer. In school, Christiana is a Spartan Ambassador and was the previous co-president of Angel 34. She is involved with other clubs such as Teen Counseling, HOSA, and FBLA.

After high school, Christiana plans to attend Boston University on the pre-med track with an undecided major and public health minor.

“My dad is a doctor, so he has inspired me. I am a part of the Emerging Health Professional program that truly opens my eyes to the possibilities in healthcare and its rewarding nature,” Christiana said.

Overall, journalism class has taught Christiana numerous writing skills. She has learned how to maintain an objective voice in her articles and while editing others. She also was able to learn how to build professional relationships and advocate for causes she is passionate about.

After taking away important lessons from high school herself, Christiana wants to leave some words of wisdom for her younger peers.

“High school is so much more than worrying about getting all A’s and maintaining a perfect GPA. It is about building lifelong friendships, taking the time to have fun, and getting involved in your school and community in areas you are passionate about,” Christiana said. “So, make sure to prioritize those aspects because those are the memories you want to remember when looking back.”
